How to Reduce No-Shows at Your Salon by 40%

No-shows cost the average salon thousands of dollars a year. Here are the strategies that actually work — from deposit policies to SMS reminders.

No-shows are one of the most frustrating and costly problems a salon owner faces. A missed appointment means a stylist sitting idle, lost revenue, and a time slot that could have gone to a waiting client.

The good news? With the right combination of systems and policies, most tenants can cut their no-show rate by 30–40% within the first month.

1. Require a Booking Deposit

This is the single most effective change you can make. When a customer has money on the line, they are dramatically more likely to show up — or at least give you advance notice if they can not.

A deposit does not have to be the full amount. Even $10–$25 is enough to create accountability. You can set this up in Trimsy under Settings → Bookings → Deposit amount.

2. Send Automated SMS Reminders

An email reminder buried in an inbox does very little. An SMS reminder that buzzes a phone screen at 8am on the day of the appointment is hard to ignore.

Trimsy sends two automatic reminders for every booking: one three days out, and one on the morning of the appointment. In testing, tenants using both reminders see a 25–35% drop in no-shows compared to tenants using no reminders at all.

3. Make Cancellation Easy

Counterintuitively, making it easy to cancel actually reduces no-shows. When clients have a frictionless way to cancel — like a link in their SMS reminder — they are more likely to do so instead of just not turning up.

A cancellation 24 hours out is far better than a no-show. It gives you time to fill the slot.

4. Have a Clear No-Show Policy

Write a short, friendly cancellation and no-show policy and display it during the booking process. Customers should acknowledge it before confirming. Trimsy lets you customise this text and require acknowledgement with a checkbox.

The goal is not to punish clients — it is to set clear expectations.

5. Enable Card-on-File

With Stripe Connect enabled, you can save a customer's card at booking time without charging it immediately. If they no-show, you can charge the no-show fee in one click from the booking record.

Putting It Together

The most effective tenants combine all five approaches: a small deposit, two SMS reminders, easy cancellation, a visible policy, and card-on-file as a backstop. Implemented together, most tenants see no-show rates drop from 10–15% to under 5%.

Start with the deposit and SMS reminders — you will see results within the first week.
