Gift Cards for Salons: How to Sell More and Redeem Smoothly
Gift cards are one of the most underused revenue tools in salons. Here is how to make them a meaningful part of your business.
Gift cards are unusual as a revenue tool: you get paid upfront, often before any service is delivered — and in some cases, a percentage of gift cards are never redeemed at all (a phenomenon called "breakage").
Here is how to build a gift card program that drives new client acquisition and generates consistent revenue.
When to Push Gift Cards
Gift cards sell best in the two weeks leading up to major gift-giving occasions:
- Christmas — your biggest gift card season by far
- Mother's Day — particularly strong for hair and beauty
- Valentine's Day
- Father's Day (for barber shops and men's grooming)
Set up a reminder in your calendar to run a gift card push campaign four weeks before each occasion.
Physical vs Digital
Digital gift cards (delivered by email) are increasingly preferred and remove the cost and logistics of physical cards. Trimsy generates unique gift card codes that are tracked in the system and can be redeemed at checkout.
If you want physical cards for gifting in-store, simple printed cards with a code are sufficient — you do not need embossed plastic.
Promoting Them
- A pinned Instagram post or story with a link to purchase
- A message to your existing client base ("Know someone who deserves a treat?")
- A small display near the payment terminal ("Gift cards available — ask us")
The highest-converting touch point is often the front desk at checkout, when a satisfied client is most likely to think of someone to give a gift to.
Managing Redemptions
Track every gift card as an outstanding liability until it is redeemed. Trimsy records the balance against the gift card code and deducts at checkout automatically. This keeps your cash flow picture accurate.
Set a clear validity period — 3 years is standard in Australia and required under consumer law in most states.
