How to Get More 5-Star Google Reviews for Your Salon

Reviews drive new clients more than any other factor in local search. Here is a systematic approach to growing your rating.

A salon with 4.8 stars and 200 reviews will always outperform one with 4.9 stars and 12 reviews in local search results. Volume matters as much as score. Here is how to build both.

The Timing Is Everything

The best time to ask for a review is immediately after a great experience — when the client is still in the chair or just paying at the desk. A verbal ask ("If you're happy with today, a Google review would mean so much to us") combined with a follow-up message has the highest conversion rate.

Trimsy can send an automatic review request SMS one hour after a completed appointment. The message includes a direct link to your Google review page — no searching required.

Make It One Tap

The biggest barrier to leaving a review is friction. Generate your Google review link from your Google Business Profile dashboard and use a URL shortener to make it shareable. Include it in your review request SMS, your email footer, and a small card at the desk.

The fewer steps between "I'm happy" and "I've left a review," the more reviews you will get.

Respond to Every Review

Google's algorithm gives higher visibility to businesses that actively manage their profile. Responding to reviews — both positive and negative — signals to Google that you are engaged.

For positive reviews, a brief, genuine thank you is enough. For negative reviews, acknowledge the issue, apologise, and offer to resolve it offline. Never argue or make excuses in a public reply.

Handle Negative Reviews Gracefully

One or two negative reviews in a sea of positives does not hurt your business. In fact, a profile with a mix of ratings looks more authentic than one with only five-star reviews. What matters is how you respond.

A reply that says "We're sorry you had this experience. Please contact us directly at [email] so we can make it right" demonstrates professionalism to every future reader.

How Many Reviews Do You Need?

Aim to reach 50 reviews as quickly as possible — this is roughly the threshold where a Google Business profile starts to appear consistently in the top three local results. From there, focus on maintaining a steady flow of new reviews rather than a burst of activity.
