The 30-Minute Booking Setup: Why Onboarding Should Not Take All Weekend

If your booking system needed three days to set up, you have outgrown it. Here is what a modern 30-minute setup actually covers.

Booking software ten years ago required a "consultant" and a multi-day setup project. That's no longer necessary, and any vendor that still charges for setup is selling complexity, not capability.

What a fast setup actually covers

A modern booking system should reach "live and taking bookings" in under an hour:

  1. Sign up — email, password, business name. 30 seconds.
  2. Business hours — typical opening times by day. 2 minutes.
  3. Services — name, price, duration. 5 minutes for a typical menu of 10–20 services.
  4. Staff — names, hours they work, services they perform. 5 minutes.
  5. Payment processor connect — Stripe or Square OAuth. 2 minutes.
  6. Booking link — copy the URL, drop it in your Instagram bio. 30 seconds.

That's 15 minutes of actual work. Add another 15 for branding (logo, colours, custom subdomain) and you're at 30 minutes total.

What slow systems make you do

The systems that take days are usually doing one of two things:

  • Database migration: importing your existing client list. This SHOULD be a CSV upload that takes 30 seconds. If they're charging for migration, they're charging for incompetence.
  • "Consultation calls": a sales call disguised as setup. The vendor wants three meetings with you to "understand your business." You don't need that — you need a booking link.

Where it does take longer

Two genuinely complex setups that justify time:

  • Multi-location, multi-staff: a 5-location chain with 80 staff and 200 services takes a few hours. Trimsy's onboarding wizard handles this in batches.
  • Custom integrations: Xero accounting sync, custom reporting, advanced payroll. These are rare and usually post-launch, not pre-launch.

The "good enough" setup

You don't need the perfect setup before going live. A salon that gets a basic booking page live and takes bookings today is ahead of a salon that's still configuring the loyalty engine three weeks in.

The minimum viable booking page:

  • Business name and one location
  • Top 5 services (your bread-and-butter)
  • One or two staff members
  • Online booking enabled
  • A working "Book Now" link in your Instagram bio

Everything else — loyalty, gift cards, advanced reporting — can be added in weeks 2–4 once you've started taking bookings.

How Trimsy compares

Trimsy's onboarding wizard is 10 steps and takes about 20–30 minutes for a typical single-chair salon. Multi-location takes 45–60 minutes. There are no setup fees, no consultant calls, no scheduled go-lives. You're live the moment you've finished the wizard.

What to ignore

Vendors who pitch their setup process as a feature ("our white-glove onboarding team will guide you through!") are usually compensating for software that's hard to configure. Modern software shouldn't need a guide.

Test before committing: can you sign up, configure 5 services, and take a test booking in under 30 minutes? If yes, the software is ready for you. If no, walk away.
