Understanding Your Salon's Numbers: A Beginner's Guide to Reports
Most salon owners look at revenue. The ones who grow quickly look at four other numbers too. Here is what to track and why.
Revenue is the number every salon owner watches, but it is a lagging indicator — by the time revenue drops, something else has already been going wrong for weeks. Here are the metrics that give you earlier warning and more useful insight.
1. Average Transaction Value (ATV)
ATV is total revenue divided by the number of completed services. If your ATV is trending down, your team may be under-upselling, clients may be booking cheaper services, or your pricing needs review.
Track it weekly. A 10% increase in ATV — without a single new client — is a 10% revenue increase.
2. Client Retention Rate
What percentage of clients who visit in a given month come back within 90 days? Industry average is around 40%. Salons with strong loyalty programs and reminder systems consistently see 55–65%.
If your retention rate is below 35%, no amount of marketing spend will compensate. Fix retention first.
3. Booking Conversion Rate
Of clients who reach your online booking page, how many complete a booking? If this is below 30%, something is creating friction — too many steps, confusing service descriptions, or a lack of a deposit option causing hesitation.
4. Queue Wait Time
Average wait time for walk-ins is a direct measure of operational efficiency. If it is consistently above 20 minutes, you either need more staff during peak hours or better demand management.
5. No-Show Rate
Track this per staff member as well as overall. A stylist with a significantly higher no-show rate than others may be dealing with a booking type or client segment that needs a different approach.
Where to Find These in Trimsy
Go to Reports in your admin panel. The Overview report shows ATV and revenue. The Retention report shows return visit rates. The Queue report shows average wait times. The Bookings report shows no-show and cancellation rates by staff member and service.
Set a recurring reminder to review these numbers on the first Monday of every month.
