What Tradespeople Look For in Job Booking Software
Plumbers, electricians, and locksmiths have different booking needs to salons — but most "salon software" works for them with the right tweaks. Here is the breakdown.
Tradespeople have been an afterthought in booking software for years. Most platforms were built for hairdressers, then later "extended" with travel time and quote workflows. The ones that work for trades have specific qualities.
The trades-specific needs
A plumber's day is different from a barber's. Specifically:
- Travel time matters. A 9am job in Bondi and a 10am job in Parramatta are not adjacent appointments.
- Job duration is unpredictable. A blocked drain might take 30 minutes or 3 hours. The booking system needs to flex.
- Quotes precede bookings. Most jobs start with a quote, then convert to a booking once the customer accepts.
- Customers are properties, not people. Repeat business is often "the place I serviced last winter," not the homeowner's name.
What good software does
- Travel buffers: configurable per booking, automatically protected on the calendar
- Quote-to-job conversion: a customer requests a quote, the trade quotes, the customer accepts, the booking lands on the calendar
- Property records, not just customer records: address-based history with notes about access, parking, dogs on the property
- Photo upload: before/after photos that the trade can attach to the job and share with the customer
- Deposit collection: especially for jobs over $500, a 30% deposit at booking dramatically reduces no-shows
What to ignore
- Field service management features for big enterprises. Route optimisation across 20 trucks is a different product. If you're 1–4 trades, skip it.
- Inventory management. Useful for parts-heavy businesses, overkill for service-only.
- Complex pricing rules. Most trades quote per-job, not per-hour-with-modifiers.
Trimsy for trades
Trimsy supports trades workflows out of the box:
- Travel buffer per service or per booking
- Standalone quote builder with email send + customer accept/decline buttons
- Customer records with multiple addresses (and per-address notes)
- Stripe / Square deposit collection
- Job photos uploaded to the customer record
It's not a tradies-only tool — it's a service-business tool that happens to handle trades cleanly. Salons + trades on the same platform sounds odd; in practice the workflows overlap more than you'd expect.
When to choose specialist software
If you're a 50+ truck enterprise, doing route optimisation, GPS tracking, and dispatcher views, look at field service platforms (ServiceTitan, Tradify, AroFlo). They're 5–10x the price but built for that scale.
For solo tradies through 10-person teams, a generalist booking platform is the right call. Lower cost, faster onboarding, easier to switch out of if it doesn't work.
